Scott Makela

Scott Makela's energy continues to resonate throughout the Cranbrook community. On May 7, Scott passed on suddenly, shocking and saddening Academy students, fellow instructors, family and friends.

As co-instructor of the 2D Design program at Cranbrook's Academy of Art (along with his wife, Laurie), his work and teaching style reveled in the risqué, titillating the observer with words and pictures that stimulated intellect, sexual desire, and the visual senses. Cutting edge thought and notion were consistently prominent. During my duration of study at the Academy, I observed the Makelas on campus and in critique situations. The connection between the couple was one I always admired and respected. I dream of finding a partner to share all aspects of life with as the Makelas seemed to do so effortlessly and successfully. Along with teaching a thriving and highly-reputed department of designers, the Makelas developed and promoted their design business called WORDS + PICTURES. As a team, both Scott and Laurie worked with world-renowned companies such as NIKE, did video work for Janet and Michael Jackson, and were influential in the Cranbrook Institute of Science's new identity. I recall recently visiting the Science Institute and being thoroughly impressed by the video presentation created by the Makelas for the orientation theatre. I recognized the inclusion of their 8 year old daughter Carmela's voice, making me realize how intermeshed their relationship, family, and business really were.

A few short weeks ago, my daughter and I attended the celebration of Scott's life. The ceremonial facet was performed in the Buddhist tradition, rich with chanting, incense, and some of the most personal and endearing eulogies I have ever witnessed. Scott's father spoke of his son's incredible zest for life; his energy, including his positive outlook on life and others.

Scott's love, talent and energy will continue to be a part of the Cranbrook tradition. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. Scott leaves behind his wife Laurie, his daughter Carmela, and his infant son, Nikolai.
