work is to be done, on an emotional plane. month after month, a corrective procedure, compelled to perform continuing surgery, reaching inside the chest cavity to clear away debris, prop up the breast bone, provide room to breathe there. there is hope for rehabilitation. a belief that undertaking new challenges will prove to be better than alternative, familiar strategies. a road which has been long avoided in favor of preservation of enigma. defense mechanisms to be disarmed, immune systems suppressed, rejections accepted. common diagnosis of limited madness, compatibility dysfunction, temperament mismatch. whirlwind of raw pain, obsession with remedy. sexual intoxication, spiritual hunger, the love of the addict.
