no...
he was a bit of a scholar...
huh...
think he was a teacher early on[?]
at UCLA
i have to ask my mom......

wow...
my mom majored in folklore and mythology at UCLA in the early 60's...
she said her teacher was obsessed with bluegrass music.....
maybe theres a connection....

ah my mom.....
fascinating.......
i showed her the john fahey obit pic........
he was her friggin teacher!
in '66........
amazing synchronicity.....
she went to ucla for only 2 semesters....
he only taught for a very brief time....
i asked her all these questions......
you should interview her for your webzine...
the whole class he would just play music.......
her memories are very vague /general
he'd sit on a stool and play banjo to the class
he'd bring in tapes of original bluegrass recordings....
and always would apologise to the class for the sound quality....
but he'd beg the class to try to hear through to the "peoples" music...
my mom said....
he had this deep passion for bluegrass....
was always late....
looked unkept....
was very nice....
shy....
wore flannel
those are all her memories......
that she learned nothing about folklore and mythology beyond....
bluegrass music culture....
it was her favorite class....
very unstrucured......
its his birthday today........
she got to hear him play.....
i want to swim in her brain......
her impressions are a bit vague
[to put it lightly]
