joseph d'angelo
revisited

[ed. note]- in response to the mystere: departmentstore santas article from desiderata #5 (spring 2oo1), i was contacted in december 2oo1 by mr. joseph d'angelo, who kindly shared additional information, which i have compiled into an unofficial departmentstore santas website...

j> Hi--thank you for your kind words; we are glad you enjoyed our record! Please feel free to write, Jos.

w> thanx for writing... tell me more about the departmentstore santas... any bio/historical info... where from...? what can you tell me about the making of the record, where was it recorded, on what kind of equipment? was the band a working group, or a recording project only?

j> well briefly i can tell you, "d.s.s." was the name i used for my recording projects at the time; "medieval castle" was recorded 1981-82 on various reel-to-reel and/or cassette decks and pressed 500 copies in 1984

w> was there any more music?

decentones at sdyc [bart brashers, joseph d'angelo, erik brashers] j> This same group of musicians/friends played as Guy Good and the Decentones, which were more Erik and Bart's or Erik and Matt's songs. "There are no clean people" was recorded in 83-84 and pressed 500 copies in Jan. 85 at RecordTechnology in Camarillo. We still have tons of recorded material which has not been published, much from various permutations of these musicians. Matt, Erik and I did play live occasionally as "Tombstone" as a 3-piece during breaks in Guy Good set.

Wiley Evans (tuba for guy good) has the guy good album link to his webpage at sausagefactory.

w> what about friend of ghost...? what else have you done?

j> "Friends of Ghosts" was local musician "Donny Darq" 's group during 85-86(?); he produced his own albums also ("Realm of the Senses"); I played bass for awhile w/ this group, and bass and then guitar for "Family Pet" , and we self-produced lp "Highland Avenue" in '91.

Since then i have stockpiled another decade of unreleased material. Still recording. Oh well!

w> were there any other d.s.s./top shelf releases in other formats? singles, cassettes, etc?

j> the only other project i released was "rural hi-tech symphony" ('87), cassette only. erik brashers played guitar on one song. played on wfmu a couple of times.

Thank you for your enthusiasm!! --will keep you posted on any further releases, Jos.
